The research focus of AIT aquaculture is to develop and promote greener aquaculture technologies for better health management, Nutrition, and genetic stock improvement
towards sustainable production, and to better place its graduates in the emerging job markets.
The current AIT Aquaculture research centers on the development of cutting-edge technologies for environment-friendly aquaculture production systems for energy, nutrient,
and water conservation. Major thematic areas for research include:
- Biofloc technology in finfish and shellfish aquaculture
- Re-circulating Aquaculture Systems
- Integrated multitrophic aquaculture systems
- Aquaponic production systems
- Biosecure systems for healthy aquaculture
- Design and formulation of cost-effective feeding systems in aquaculture

AARM also has devised a research platform on the theme of Sustainable Asian Aquaculture to drive its future research targets. This embraces the use of alternative sources to fish meal in aquafeeds, improving productivity of culture stocks by efficient health management and development of improved stocks by selective breeding using advanced genomic tools, efficient management of wastes generated from aquaculture, and the applications of alternative energy sources in driving aquaculture systems.
